The conference’s purpose is to develop leadership skills, connect community members, and foster a deeper understanding of relevance of APIA issues to personal lives.

APIA Awakening is filled with workshops, keynote speakers, and opportunities for personal development and education about multiple communities’ issues. The workshop facilitators represent various backgrounds and experiences including AASU alumni, community members, and UF faculty and staff.

The 3 respective workshop session categories are 1) Individual Focus, 2) Asian American issues and 3) Intersection with other communities.

Our keynote speaker is Rosalind Chou from GSU. Our other facilitators are as follows:

FLP Spring Retreat '12

FLP’s SPRING RETREAT
The retreat was from February 17-18 in Graham Gallery. It was a time for self-reflection and bonding with your Class VI freshies! We had an enjoyable time as we raced to the Plazas, giggled over Egg Drop, and etc. We hope you took to heart all that we had to say!

Our first two Spring meetings took place on January 26 & February 6. We hope we gave you a new perspective to what you can do within AASU and FLP so that you can become a part of something even bigger than life: AASU WEEK 2012–ascension.

If you haven’t contacted with the Head of your event, do so ASAP so that we can get things rolling! Here’s the line-up for AASU Week:

Sat– Mini-Conference; Learn about the behind-the-scenes work that goes into planning educational workshops and guest speaker presentations, as well as Asian American issues and how to raise awareness on these issues.

Sun–AASU Olympics; If you went out to AASU Field Day, you’ll know this Michael Fronda-led event will also be a hoot! Get excited to prepare a variety of exhilarating and mind-provoking games/activities as all AASU suborgs compete for the win!

Mon–Birthday Bash; AASU is turning 19! Our umbrella organization celebrates its birthday by honoring those most dedicated and hardworking to their suborgs. You’ll be helping coordinate decorations, awards, catering, programming and tech.

Tue–Gameshow Night; A new addition, this gameshow night will be lots of fun to plan as you will see what goes into planning a fun competition filled with competing mentor/mentee pairs!

Thu–Film Screening with APIA with panel; Everyone loves educational films and guest speakers! Why not have both?

Fri–Closing Ceremony; This committee is based on applications. Learn what it takes to put on a large-scale production, as far as programming and working with special guest performances.

Sat–Block Party; Set outside on Reitz Colonnade/North Lawn, this event is also a never before seen one! Get the chance to work with AASU suborgs as well as the Black Student Union, Hispanic Student Association and the Pride Student Union. Games, cultural engagement and TONS of food entail!

Big big BIG shoutout to our dodgeball committee for putting on FLP’s Dodgeballin for Babies. This dodgeball competition raised over $400 for the March of Dimes foundation! Way to achieve our goal committee, over ten teams registered! Such a huge success, from finding over $400 worth of sponsorship to running logistics to finding an after-social venue and everything in between. We’d like to recognize each and everyone of you:

We’d like for you to join us for our Mentor Mentee, aka M&M, Week from October 11-13th. During these 3 days, we have lined up for you engaging activities so that you can get to know your mentor or mentee better.

M&M Week 2011:
Tues, Oct 11 (6:30 PM)–Cupcake Wars, Reitz Colonnade
Showcase your cupcake decorating skills, while you bond with your mentors/mentees! The theme for the cupcake decorating contest is “This is My Mentor, This is My Mentee,” in which you will decorate your cupcake according to what your mentor or mentee is like. 10 finalists will be chosen by the FLP Directors, and then everyone will vote on the first place winner.
***Please bring 2 baked undecorated cupcakes (for yourself and your mentor/mentee), as well as decorating supplies (i.e.–sprinkles, icing, and etc). We shall be providing a limited amount of decorating supplies, so do please remember to bring your own as well.

Wed, Oct 12 (11:30 AM- 1:30 PM)–Krishna Lunch on the Plazas of the Americas
Enjoy the nice weather with your newly acquainted M&M as we lunch on Krishna. A vegetarian but oh-so filling buffet awaits us all for only $4/person! Also, we would highly encourage both you and your mentor/mentee to attend the Asian Kaleidoscope Month’s (AKM) Opening Ceremony presenting guest speaker Rex Lee from the highly acclaimed Entourage! FLP is proud to be working with the Florida Cicerones Tradition Keeper Committee to have you riled up to explore UF through a campus-wide Scavenger Hunt! This is just yet another exciting opportunity for you all to release some test anxiety with some fresh air and fun There will be prizes for the winner as well, so get ready to whip out them maps!
